09:49 am - vagaries of attending a muslim-organized rally
"From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!" is a one-state solution slogan, right??

01:45 pm - Call Israel - Let's repurpose this Robyn song
So this is a kind of placeholder/call for help post. I want to rewrite the lyrics of Robyn's "Call Your Girlfriend" to "Call Israel". Because I'm sick and tired of old and/or unimaginative slogans.

Here are the original lyrics. If you want to start/help me out, go ahead!

Call your girlfriend, i think it's time you talked
Give your reasons, say it's not her fault
But you just met somebody new

Tell her not to get upset
Second guessing everything, you said and done
And then when she gets upset tell her
How you never meant to hurt no one

You just tell her that the only way her heart will mend
Is when she learns to love again
And it won't make sense right now
Cause you're still her friend
and then you let her down easy

Call your girlfriend, i think its time you talk
Give your reasons, say it's not her fault
But you just met somebody new

Don't you tell her how I give you something
That you never even knew you missed
Don't you even try and explain
How it's so different when we kiss

You tell her that the only way her heart will mend
Is when she learns to love again
And it won't make sense right now
But you're still her friend and then you let her down easy

Call your girlfriend, it's time you had the talk
Give your reasons, say it's not her fault
But you just met somebody new
And now it's gonna be me and you

And you tell her that the only way her heart will mend
Is when she learns to love again
And it won't make sense right now
But you're still her friend and then you let her down easy

Call your girlfriend, it's time you had the talk
Give your reasons, say it's not her fault

Call your girlfriend, it's time you had the talk
Give your reasons, say it's not her fault
But you just met somebody new

08:23 pm - hey mom
So I call my mom to chat about my cousin and catch up. At some point during the call I tell her that I'll call my sisters after being done with the call. We eventually finish the call. I then call Nadine. Turns out she's on the other line with my mom. Hi mom, couldn't you wait 10 minutes??

12:11 pm - another apparent suicide in the family
This is a cousin three times removed, but whom I spent a lot of my youth with. We looked down on that whole family, but somehow I guess we should have looked at ourselves because we spent a lot of time with them. (Both parents were pretty fucked up. You know that Homer Simpson choke grip on Bart? Imagine that, but also pushing the child up the wall at the same time.) We weren't in touch in adult life, I don't really care about her, but I feel angry anyway. People should receive the right kind of care that works for them in order to heal. It's hard when your whole life is an open wound, though. This cousin dealt with it with substance abuse.

*** ETA: Confirmed. The obituary mentions that her struggles with mental health are over, and there was a special thanks to her doctor. So she was getting some good care, at least. I'm still angry.
Current Mood: Moody, motherfucker.

11:57 am - dev panic attack
The brief panic attack that seizes you when the massive bug you solved yesterday shows up AGAIN. Then you realize that you didn't sync the repo, or forgot to start an ancillary server, and there is no problem after all.

Back to defcon 5.

11:21 pm - I could do the Winter Olympics
but I think Brazil is taking this repression and displacement shit too far. Not that I care too much about soccer, but I usually watch the World Cup with Firoza, it's kind of a thing for us. So I think I won't be watching, and it won't make a difference whatsoever.

09:06 pm - character encoding
Welcome to the intersection of passing data from rails to angular through cookies (don't ask, just an edge case), and finding out that the character encoding gets confused along the way. I think I have to hate Rails on that one, not Angular. Sigh.

09:46 pm - stack upon stack upon stack...
Edge case, meet edge case. You guys now form a corner.

PS: Also, very amusing: Even though I'm listening to music on my phone and I'm posting this from my laptop, livejournal was able to automagically pick up the song thanks to last.fm. Wheee!)

PPS: I miss Dreamwidth's autocomplete on tags. How hard would it be for LJ to merge DW's new features back in?

12:48 am - Concert Review: Neko Case
As hsifyppah posted about Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn, I shall do a quick concert post, too. So I finally saw Neko Case live, at Massey Hall. I had never been to Massey Hall, so it was a fun first time. What a great theatre, except for the damn lack of leg room.

I unfortunately did not have the transcendent experience Brooke had, which I was hoping for. I realized that I have fallen behind by a couple albums, and she mostly played recent tunes, which I was unfamiliar with. She played maybe one of my ten favourites. But ohh her voice, so nice, and she had a really awesome backing band, including a great banjo player from Phoenix (who also played guitar, trumpet, and that horizontal/table guitar thing, depending on the song). She had a good backup vocalist, Kelly Hogan, who was better than her at stage banter :) They did an a cappella song that totally broke my heart, it was awesome. She alternated between just singing, and playing bass, electric and acoustic guitar, depending on the track. She also had a great duet with her guitar player, during the encore, which was charming as hell. I hoped that she would do a second encore, the crowd was into it, but it wasn't to be.

A friend of mine had bought the tickets when the sale opened, so we were on the balcony, which is not something I usually do, but we had a good view of the stage. I enjoyed the performance, but from my viewpoint, Case didn't quite have the stage presence that would have brought this from "way better live than on the recording". 7/10, would do again, but not at $60 per ticket.

Speaking of catching up to bands I've wanted to see forever, and Neko Case, The New Pornographers will be in town in September I think, for some festival or another. I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully Case can make it...
